Ryanair cuts yet-to-fly Ibiza, Murcia and Malmo routes from Edinburgh
Ryanair claims 300 jobs will be lost and services cut after talks with BAA to reduce the cost of using the airport broke down.
The airline said it would have to cut the numbers of planes based there from seven to six and will stop flying to Berlin, Malmo, Murcia, Ibiza and Tallinn.
However, the Tallinn flights have already been suspended for the winter and the Ibiza, Malmo and Murcia routes were only announced on 31 January and are yet to start flying. Read more »

New dates added to M25 tour
A sightseeing company has added extra dates to its tour of the M25, for which it charges punters £15 a pop.
The trip, which spends four hours touring the ‘sights’ of the 117-mile motorway, takes in the “amazing sights” of the Queen Elizabeth II bridge in Dartford, Kent, and Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5.

‘Stewardess yourself’ with KLM on Facebook
Dutch airline KLM has developed a new Facebook application that allows customers to see what they would look like as a KLM stewardess.
‘Stewardess Yourself’, on the KLM Facebook page, allows users to paste their faces onto the bodies of glamorous cabin crew on a series of KLM postcards.
The application is the latest example that KLM is becoming increasingly social media savvy, after reports surfaced around a “meet and seat” idea that would allow passengers to select who they sit next to on flights based on Facebook and LinkedIn profiles.
UK Border Agency under fire for letting 500,000 into UK without proper checks
A new report by UKBC shows that thousands were allowed through passport control in the UIK without being examined against the Home Office’s Warnings Index, a list of known dangerous criminals and terrorists.

Budget airline Ryanair has launched legal action against screen scraper travel site Budget Travel.
Ryanair is claiming the Budget Travel’s practise of purchasing tickets through the Ryanair website and reselling them for a minimal additional charge of €18 breaches their terms and conditions. Read more »

Europcar releases iPhone app
Europcar, the world’s leading hire car company, has released an iPhone app which will allow its customers to search any of its over 5300 locations in 150 countries, and hire a car on the go.
The free application, available in seven languages, will allow user to make reservations in-app which will be confirmed via email or SMS.
Users can also check special offers and promotional rates and hire any additional items they might need such as child seats and sat navs. Read more »

New travel company daytoursworld.com has announced its intention to “sell our business in 10 years’ time for $200 million”.
The company, which specialises in day trips around the world, introduced itself at the TNT Travel Show in London in October, followed by a soft launch at World Travel Market a month later.

London 2012 hotel prices ‘extortionate’
Shadow minister for London and the Olympics Tessa Jowell has slammed the “scandal of extortionate price rises” among hotels during London 2012, adding that the government must clamp down on unreasonable hotel rates.
Jowell alleged that prices across London were averaging an increase of 315 per cent, and called for action “on behalf of those already struggling families across the UK”.
Lufthansa reports record year for passenger numbers
German airline Lufthansa carried more passengers to and from the UK and Ireland than ever before, it announced, with record breaking figures for Scotland and Manchester.
Lufthansa said its biggest increase was in Scotland, where the airline’s new service between Aberdeen and Frankfurt proved a success with number growing more than 25%. Read more »
Valentine’s Day travel sparks surge in mobile app searches
Valentine’s Day sparked a surge in mobile searches for hotels, according to Hotels.com.
The travel company said that searches via its mobile app were up 20% this week as customers looked for last minute Valentine deals.
Venice was the most popular Valentine’s Day travel destination this year, as searches increased 138% for a hotel in the city, compared to a 33% increase in searches for Paris and a 28% increase for Rome. Read more »

Smartphones and social media are rarely used by 18-35 year old travellers when globetrotting, a breakthrough survey has revealed.

One in ten 18-25 year olds have lost their virginity while on holiday, according to a poll of almost 2000 young Brits.
Online travel agency sunshine.co.uk also found that 98 per cent of those who lost their virginity on holiday never saw the person they slept with again after going home.
